The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that the world population will reach 9.1 billion inhabitants in 2050 and that world food production will have to increase by about 70% (above 2005/2007) to keep up with the increase in demand.
According to a UN study (UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2021), 17% of all food available for consumption is wasted. The study concludes that food waste is not restricted to developed countries, it is a global problem. Food waste accelerates CO2 and CH4 (methane) emissions because, when food is dumped, we waste the energy and water used to grow, produce and package them. Therefore, an innovative circular system is needed to minimize the loss of resources.
Food Balance dedicated itself to this cause by developing technologies for a sustainable production of recycled products from food industry byproducts, which, we believe, will solve many of the global problems associated with hunger, resource depletion and climate change. Many of the untapped resources found in the food industry are a source of nutrients that can be reintroduced into the chain through the recycling of the grains that are used by the beverage industry in its production. In this process, discarded low value byproducts are transformed into high value products, with an important contribution to the circular economy and the world food challenge.
